De Krans is no stranger to winning big with their ports (thanks to the Douro-like terroir and climate). With the annual release of the Top Wine SA Classification, no less than three of De Krans’ award winning Cape ports were placed in this year’s Top 10 Cape Ports list.

In essence, the 2018 Top Wine SA Classification is a compilation of all wine and fortified style wines that have achieved very good or excellent scores by judging experts from wine shows and competitions both local and international over a 10-year span (2008- 2017). These include the Michelangelo Awards (SA), Veritas Awards (SA), Platters Wine Guide and the international Wine Challenge (UK).

To qualify for this coveted list, the wine must have received high scores from at least one of the recognised panel of judges and for a minimum of three vintages over the decade. Based on accolades awarded from 2007-2018, the De Krans Cape Tawny NV, De Krans Cape Vintage and our flagship, the De Krans Cape Vintage Reserve all reserved themselves a spot on the Top 10 Cape Ports list.
In addition, the De Krans Cape Vintage Reserve has earned a spot on the 2018 Top Wine SA Hall of Fame, for receiving top honours for eight vintages out of the 10 years. The Cape Vintage Reserve, De Krans’ pride and joy, is the epitome of a quality SA port with its contradictions – a mouthful taste of sweetness, yet a dry finish, complex and 20 month matured, yet smooth and easy drinkable. The port boasts with ripe dark fruit and dark chocolate and is packed with flavour combinations of red berries, cherries, stewed prunes and dark chocolate. The port is best served with baked desserts, mature cheese or enjoyed on its own.

The De Krans Cape Vintage, true to its name, gives a rather accurate portrayal of the quality of grapes in any specific year. A blend of the big five of Portuguese grape varieties (Touriga Nacional, Tinta Barocca, Tinta Roriz, Tinta Amarela and Souzao), this port has rich flavours of red fruit, dried prunes, cocoa and spice. Ripe tannins, a balanced acidity and the well-integrated alcohol ensure a long finish.
The De Krans Cape Tawny NV (non-vintage) is in a class (and taste) of its own with its toffee, nutty, caramel character. This port style is usually a blend of different vintages between five and 10 years, resulting in a light copper, amber colour. While an excellent pairing with baked desserts, the Tawny is perfect for dessert, served chilled in summer.
