Steenberg wins Museum Class Trophy at Old Mutual Trophy Wine Show
15:51:00Steenberg has received the highest recognition for ageability of its cool climate wines by clinching the Trophy for the Best Museum Class Sauvignon Blanc at the 2018 Old Mutual Trophy Wine Show.
The Steenberg Sauvignon Blanc Reserve 2011 is a true expression of Steenberg’s terroir and gives real meaning to sense of place. It was the last bottling under the Reserve label to be crafted from the oldest Sauvignon Blanc block on Steenberg farm. This vineyard block now finds its home in Steenberg’s Black Swan Sauvignon Blanc.
“After seven years in bottle the wine still shows remarkably bright with an almost luminescent lime green colour. The nose has developed from its primary fruit characters to more yellow citrus, marmalade and just a hint of green figs,” says winemaker JD Pretorius.
The palate shows beautiful intensity with a powerful core of vibrant fruit weight, initial lemon and lime evolving into preserved fig and a gunflint-like mineral character on the finish. Integrated and supple acidity carries throughout the wine, giving it backbone and brightness, balanced by fruit intensity from bottle ageing.
“The wine is drinking beautifully now and will continue to develop well over the next few years,” adds Pretorius.
Steenberg has made a limited number of this rare museum class wine available for purchase at the tasting room at R325 per bottle.
