Chocolate; Chicken Curry; Beef & Red Onion Marmalade; Waterblommetjie; Mexican Meatball; and biltong and blue cheese – these are just a few of the soups being served at this year’s Breedekloof Soetes & Soup festival, taking place on Friday, 20 and Saturday, 21 July.

This lively winter celebration, which is hosted at various wineries in the Rawsonville, Slanghoek, Goudini, and Breede River areas, will serve you complimentary cups of steaming homemade country soup accompanied by a glass of red or dessert wines. Soetes & Soup is a showcase of the Breedekloof’s finest wines and hearty homemade soups– once again affirming why this valley is fast becoming known as “South Africa’s most generous wine route”.

Highlights over the festival weekend include live entertainment by various artists, including Jazz-rock artist Michael Meiring at Bergsig Estate, upbeat hits by DJ Chris Erasmus at Badsberg Cellar, the talented acoustic duo Jaco & Isabella at Jason’s Hill, as well as the famous and much-loved Afrikaans singers Emile Swiegers and Valiant Swart as well as Handré Meyer at Opstal Estate. Husband and wife team, The Romantix will be performing at Deetlefs Estate and there will be live entertainment by Case Closed as well as the brilliant guitarist Loki Rothman with Daschbosch and Goudini Wines at uniWines Vineyards. The Gospel duo Kaleidoskoop’s performance at Bosjes promises to be a hit, too.

In addition to the delicious home-made soups on offer, other traditional delicacies like ‘roosterkoek’, tripe, hanepoot jelly shots, potjiekos and biltong are on offer at various wineries and visitors are encouraged to ‘hop’ (with designated drivers!) from winery-to-winery to enjoy the full buffet of offerings during the festival. Safe play areas for children and kids’ activities are provided at most wineries, to allow an enjoyable experience for the whole family.

What to expect:

The festival extends across the Breedekloof Wine Valley, which includes Rawsonville, Slanghoek, Goudini, and Breede River areas. Each of the participating wineries will be showcasing their award-winning red and dessert wines as well as offering a variety of entertainment and specials on their wines. Highlighting their generous country hospitality, they’ll present a complimentary cup of signature soup and some enticing pairings. Apart from the delectable soups on offer, the more active festival goers should not miss hiking trails at Jason’s Hill, or the Run the Vines Trail Run at Mountain Ridge. Other offerings include craft beer at Kirabo Private Cellar, the indoor market at Opstal, food trucks at Slanghoek Cellar, home-made Karoo Lamb Samp & Bean at Stofberg Family Vineyards and tractor rides for the kids (or whole family!) at Opstal.

Festival passes cost R160 a person and can only be bought at www.Webtickets.co.za. Your ticket will include a tasting glass, a soup mug and a coupon booklet including soup and wine tasting coupons.
