Following in the recent success of the Tim Atkin’s rating, the De Krans Cape Vintage Reserve 2015 and 2016 have done it again.

This time each receiving a Platinum Award at the 2018 Michelangelo International Wine Awards, which took place at a gala event on 29 September in Cape Town.

Not stopping there Gold was awarded to the De Krans Cape Vintage 2016 and De Krans Cape Tawny Limited Release, at the same competition.

The Platinum Award winners each received an outstanding 96 points in Tim Atkin’s SA Report, released earlier in September. Furthermore, these wines were named Overall Fortified Wine of the Year in 2017 and 2018.

According to winemaker Louis van der Riet the Cape Vintage Reserve is a big wine full of ripe dark fruit notes of plum, mulberry and black currents. Well-rounded with smooth dark chocolate undertones and firm tannins, which results in a wine that would mature well over 30years.

Since its inception the Michelangelo International Wine Awards has differentiated itself from other competitions in using a judging panel comprising a majority of international wine and spirits experts. For this year’s judging, 30 judges from 16 nationalities were called upon to score the record number of entries. This year’s judges included British Masters of Wine, sommeliers, wine and spirits producers, educators, spirits experts and influential journalists from Europe, the Far East and the Americas, some of whom have judged on numerous Michelangelo Awards panels in the past. Out of the 2 225 entries for this year’s competition, the judges awarded 26 trophies, 36 Platinum medals and 150 Double Gold medals.
