Bon Courage Wine Estate, situated in the Robertson Wine Valley, was named the top performer at the recently held Novare SA Terroir Awards with no less than three national winners and two trophies.

Pieter, André and Jacques Bruwer

Three national winners: (Winemakers notes at bottom of page)

2019 Bon Courage André's Fame Colombard
2011 Bon Courage Jacques Bruére Blanc de Blancs Cap Classique
2019 Bon Courage Lady of the House Pinotage Rosé (Dry)

Several wines from the estate scored top points, resulting in Bon Courage being awarded two trophies - Novare Trophy for SA’s Top Terroir Producer and Novare Trophy for SA's Top Terroir Wine Estate.

For this competition only wines certified as single-vineyard wines, estate-produced, or wines from a ward or district not divided into more than one ward, may participate. With a 25% increase in entries, Bon Courage is truly proud of this achievement.

“For a wine from the Estate to be selected as top in the country is a huge honour - for us to have received three such awards is beyond what words can express,” says Bon Courage Cellar Master, Jacques Bruwer.

More good news

The Robertson wine producing area (Klaasvoogds/Goedemoed), clinched a rather special trophy – the area won the Novare Trophy for SA's Top Terroir Wine Area with a combined total of 5 top national winning wines.

The Estate

Bon Courage Estate lies at the heart of the picturesque Robertson valley - often referred to as the valley of wine and roses - and home to some of South Africa’s finest wines. Bon Courage’s laurels not only lie in its locally and internationally acclaimed selection of fine wines, but also in the continued premium quality and consistency of its wide range brought on by the diverse terroir that characterises the estate. Their versatility is vast contributing factor to their consistent performance in various wine competitions.

The Estate’s success has also been a major contributing influence in establishing the Robertson Wine Valley as one of the top wine routes in South Africa.
André Bruwer
A family affair

The stately Cape Dutch homestead dates back to 1818. The estate has enjoyed the attention and dedication of four generations of the Bruwer family since 1927. It is this team consisting of father, André and his sons, Jacques and Pieter, their family values, dedication and passion that have remained the secret to Bon Courage’s success.

Cellar Master, Jacques Bruwer’s daughter and André’s eldest granddaughter, Ingé, qualified as a winemaker in 2018 and is looking to join the team soon after she has gained valuable experience abroad.

The Bon Courage Inkará wine range is the brainchild of Jacques and the name is derived from the names of his three children, Ingé, Karli and André and pays tribute to the 4th generation of Bruwer’s.

Winemakers' notes on the Novare SA Terroir Awards 2019 Winners

The Lady of the house Pinotage Rosé 2019 is the newest addition to the Bon Courage range. As an Estate we try to bottle all the wine produced. We decided to make a dry style Pinotage Rosé to pay tribute to Grandma Maude Bruwer, the first generation Bruwers on Bon Courage. Using exceptional grapes we managed to create an appealing coloured wine with overabundance flavour and taste which reflects on her passion for gardening. The vineyard is 9 years old and the flavours and style of the wine reflects our unique terroir.

2019 Bon Courage André's Fame Colombard is one of our most planted grape varieties. It has really rewarded us over the last few years. We try to handle it the same as our Sauvignon, more specifically concentrating on the thiols from the vineyards after it gets harvested, transported to the winery, trying to protect it and with every step of the way into the bottle. Colombard is a grape variety with a potential to give you a large concentration of tropical aromas and we try to focus on that component specifically. At the end of the day it comes down to our philosophy of trying to let the wines express its true characteristics in the bottle.
The 2011 Bon Courage Jacques Bruére Blanc de Blanc Cap Classique is 100% hand-made – the base wine was kept on the lees for 8 months initially during the first fermentation. 10% of the Chardonnay was barrel fermented. The “magic of the bubbles” begins during the 2nd fermentation that occurs in the bottle thereby extending maturation on the lees for 84 months. After “disgorgement” (removal of the yeast lees) and “dosage” (adding base wine and sugar) the final product is left on the cork +- 9months, and then released. The combination of terroir and cellar practice adds to the aroma of the wine.
