High praise from international wine critic for Cathedral Cellar wines

Five wines receive Medals of Excellence

Cape Town – “I sincerely hope that more people are made aware of the outstanding quality of South African wines.” This according to British Master of Wine (MW) Tim Atkin on the recent conclusion of his South African Special Report 2019.

This year, Atkin tasted 2,115 South African wines to identify the best wines South Africa has to offer. Cathedral Cellar, a premium wine portfolio by KWV, is proud to announce that Atkin awarded wines under this label with no less than five Medals of Excellence with scores of 90/100 and more.

Cathedral Cellar showcases best in class cultivars, selected from the Western Cape’s finest regions, with only the finest expression of quality produced and bottled for the range. “It is fantastic to have this quality affirmed by such a respected and global industry voice such as Tim Atkin,” says Cathedral Cellar’s Chief Winemaker, Wim Truter. Last year, three of Cathedral Cellar’s wines were included under the Medals of Excellence rung and Truter says it is encouraging that 2019 has delivered five ‘excellence’ ratings in this lauded report.

Cathedral Cellar Triptych 2016, a red blend, was rated 92/100, Cathedral Cellar Pinotage 2018, a new inclusion in the Cathedral Cellar portfolio, received an overall rating of 91/100, a score reflected by Cathedral Cellar Cabernet Sauvignon 2017. The Cathedral Cellar Sauvignon Blanc 2018 and Chardonnay 2018 both received scores of 90/100.

Cathedral Cellar was relaunched in 2019 with brand new labels boasting an augmented reality feature. Consumers can download the LABELinmotion app from Google Play or Apple App Store to interact with these labels via their own personal mobile devices – when and where they want. According to Truter this feature adds an extra dimension to the consumer experience who can now engage with the rich storytelling heritage of Cathedral Cellar wines before enjoying the highly rated quality in the bottle.
