Five Stars for Anthonij Rupert Wyn

Anthonij Rupert Wyne in Franschhoek has been awarded two 5-star ratings for wines in their illustrious portfolio.

These accolades were featured in the latest edition of the authoritative and internationally recognised Platter’s by Diners Club South African Wine Guide 2020, due for release in mid-November.

The deserving wines were the 2013 Anthonij Rupert Cabernet Franc and the 2016 Cape of Good Hope Laing Groendruif.

Already part of an impressive lineage with consistent high scores for previous vintages, the grapes for the 2013 Anthonij Rupert Cabernet Franc were carefully selected from vineyards planted on specific sites. Winemaker Dawie Botha describes this stellar wine as showcasing aromas of fruitcake, cassis and spicy flavours, with intriguing floral nuances on the finish. On the palate, the wine holds the promise of berries with added vibrant spice and graphite notes. The defined backbone of oak adds welcome support to the fruit flavours, resulting in a wine with an elegant and refined finish. As part of the Old Vines Initiative, the grapes for the carefully cultivated 2016 Cape of Good Hope Laing Groendruif, a Semillon, were sourced from Henk Laing’s farm, Trekpoort - situated on a stretch of land between Lamberts Bay and Clanwilliam, on the Skurfberg Mountain overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. In winemaker Mark van Buuren’s opinion, this is the perfect all year-round wine; showcasing stone fruit aromas tinged with a honeyed note and a light lanolin nuance. A textural wine with lovely interplay of stone fruit, and the addition of a vibrant lemon zest brightness, which carries through to a tangible flinty feel. The appealing freshness of acidity is perfectly contrasted by a structured, full body – the result of a subtle use of oak. These flavours work in perfect harmony, resulting in a wine with a long and rich finish. The Cape of Good Hope Laing Groendruif 2016 is available through the estate’s Tasting Room and online shop at R120 per bottle.
