Well-known for their superb wine range, Middelvlei Wines in Stellenbosch earned further recognition this week when their Free-Run Pinotage 2018 scored an impressive 90 points in the inaugural Prescient Pinotage Report 2020.

This maiden report was convened by Winemag.co.za, and this year there were 57 entries received from 33 producers. The entries were tasted blind by a three-person panel, and the scoring was done according to the 100-point quality scale. The panel was chaired by well-known industry influencer Christian Eedes, who was joined in the judging process by Roland Peens and James Pietersen, both of Wine Cellar.

The Middelvlei Free-Run Pinotage is made from 100% free-run juice, which is the juice that naturally drains off from a bulk of freshly crushed grapes, and ultimately results in free-run wine, which is the wine that has settled after fermentation and has been racked off. The end result is a wine of superior quality as it contains gentler tannins.

Winemaker Tinnie Momberg describes this uniquely South African varietal as a wine with complex flavours of raspberries, mulberries and elegant oak spices. The gentle tannins are perfectly balanced by the fruit weight with creamy vanilla flavours that linger on the palate. The Free-Run Pinotage 2018 is available directly from the Tasting Room at R145 per bottle, as well as select outlets nationwide.
When it comes to a food pairing look no further than enjoying the Free-Run Pinotage with a classic South African braai, or better yet Middelvlei’s Boerebraai. A unique outdoor barbecue experience where their resident braai expert prepares your chops, boerewors and chicken kebabs to perfection, as you sit back, relax and enjoy a glass of Pinotage.
