Peter junior who recently joined the farm after completing his studies, enthuses, “This Father’s Day at Groote Post we are celebrating the generations who paved the way before us, as well as, most notably, my grandfather Peter senior, and my father Nick. We will enjoy a family lunch at Hilda’s Kitchen, complemented by Groote Post’s popular range of The Old Man’s Blend wines.”

So why don’t you follow suit and spoil your Father with a bottle of The Old Man’s Blend wines, a range of Serious Wines, a Red and a White, at Seriously Good Prices!

GROOTE POST’S THE OLD MAN’S BLEND WINES

The Old Man’s Blend range came into being in 2001 at the behest of Groote Post’s ‘Old Man’, Peter Pentz senior, who asked the family to blend him a red wine to enjoy as his winter evening tipple. The enormous popularity of The Old Man’s Blend Red established a Groote Post tradition, with The Old Man’s Blend White subsequently added to the range.

Groote Post’s The Old Man’s Blend White 2020
This wine is a blend of 50% Sauvignon Blanc and 50% Chenin Blanc. The varietals are vinified separately, then blended in different ratios until the blend meets The Old Man’s approval. Displaying enticing aromas of guava and pear and gorgeous tropical fruit flavours, a fresh lively acidity livens up the palate and refreshing citrus flavours linger on the finish. Winemaker, Lukas Wentzel, proudly states that “this wine is sure to be a terrific value-for-money crowd pleaser”.

Groote Post’s The Old Man’s Blend Red 2019
This wine is a blend of 50% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon and 25% Shiraz. “This is a fantastic vintage. The three varietals all reached optimal ripeness in perfect timing for the harvest”, says Lukas Wentzel. During the winemaking and wood maturation, the cultivars are kept apart, and The Old Man takes part in rigorous tasting sessions to decide on the final blend. This is a down-to-earth, ripe-fruit-driven blend. Captivating red fruit notes delight the senses, most notably cherry, raspberry and cranberry, with soft tannins giving a smooth finish.
Retail price: Approximately R93

GROOTE POST’S PENTZ FAMILY HONOUR GENERATIONS OF FARMING AND WINEMAKING

Groote Post is a beautiful historic West Coast farm owned by the Pentz family, where three generations, each with a wealth of knowledge and experience to share, work closely together to be more successful together.

Peter senior, Nick and Peter junior enjoy a harmonious family partnership, bonded by a legacy of shared values and vision. “Our family actively embraces our role as stewards of the land for the next generation. We know that we are part of something bigger, the dedication of generations before us has provided an incredible opportunity,” says Peter Pentz junior.

“Our story began in 1904 when my great-great grandfather founded the Union Dairy in Cape Town. Dairy herds were established over time in Tokai and Philippi and subsequently in Darling when my great grandfather Oupa Nico and grandfather Peter senior bought the historic Groote Post farm in 1972, later adding two adjoining farms. Groote Post proved to be the ideal cool climate site for our family’s dairy, sheep and beef farming and subsequently grape farming and winemaking.” Peter Pentz senior likes to comment on moving from the milk to the wine industry, “Nobody ever told me they like my creamy milk, as they do with the Groote Post wines”.

The rest is history. Today Groote Post is a popular destination for locals and tourists, offering award-winning wines, superb country cuisine at Hilda’s Kitchen, Farm Drives through their private game camp and vineyards, beautiful views of the Atlantic coast and Table Mountain, nature walks, birdwatching in the hide and, of course, warm country hospitality.

Nick Pentz concludes, “Over the past year the dark clouds of coronavirus have wreaked havoc in South Africa and around the world, with a devastating impact on the wine industry. Together, we as a family had to combine our respective skills and experiences to find a way to weather the storm, to learn to do things differently. Having Peter junior joining my Dad and I on the farm after finishing his studies has been a blessing. As a proficient user of digital platforms and a professional in the communications field, we made large strides in these difficult times embracing technology, exploring new ways of reaching and engaging customers through social media, setting up virtual tastings, meetings and launches, fast-tracking the development of our online marketing and sales strategy on a variety of platforms, and much more. Throughout these tough times we have been extremely grateful for the unwavering support of our loyal followers locally and abroad.”

“At Groote Post we are three generations but one family, who respect and understand the importance of family in a family-run business in the agriculture sector. As farmers, we are people of resilience, hope and optimism and look forward to a much safer, calmer and more normal world going forward. As always, we remain committed to the growth of agriculture and agri-tourism, two of the leading job creating sectors in the Western Cape.”
