Premium Independent Wineries of South Africa (PIWOSA), a collective of likeminded, independent wine producers focused on promoting premium South African wines internationally, is pleased to welcome Avondale Estate as the association’s twelfth member.

Avondale Estate
Avondale Estate, nestled at the foot of the Klein Drakenstein Mountain just outside the town of Paarl, is a family-owned farm sustainably producing hand-crafted premium wines. Proprietor Johnathan Grieve has pioneered a unique mix of organic and biodynamic farming methods combined with the latest advances in modern science – an approach Avondale trademarked, BioLOGIC® – to create a range of nature-friendly wines of the highest quality.

PIWOSA Chairman Rollo Gabb, owner of Journey’s End Vineyards, says: “We are more than delighted to have Avondale on board at PIWOSA. Johnathan’s holistic ethos, passion and commitment to excellence both complement and align with the collective’s core values, mission and broader vision. As individuals and individual wineries, we all have our own particular characteristics, but we share an ardent passion for our wonderful country and its capacity for making world-class wines. Together we represent the incredible diversity that is seen across the Premium South African wine industry today. “

Johnathan Grieve comments: “I am honoured and excited to be part of this dynamic collective and look forward to our global roadshows executing inventive marketing programmes to enhance the profile of premium South African wines in strategic export markets.”

PIWOSA, a stand-alone, self-funded collective of wineries, was formed in January 2013 with the endorsement of industry bodies Wines of South Africa (WOSA), Wine Industry Ethical Trade Association (WIETA) and Integrated Production of Wine (IPW).

A united force, PIWOSA is now a collective of 12 wineries; Avondale, De Grendel, Glenelly, Jordan, Journey’s End, Ken Forrester, Klein Constantia, Paul Cluver, Raats Family Wines, Radford Dale, Springfield and The Drift.

Members use their combined energy, contacts and financial resources to collectively raise the perception and presence of premium South African wines internationally, supporting the work of WOSA and the industry as a whole. This they achieve through hosting innovative events, which are all about enlightenment, fun and surprises, and focused communication with key trade, media and consumers in targeted markets. They believe the halo benefits of their combined investment in this manner will increase market share for all premium SA wines.

  • A day at Klein Constantia on 2nd October
  • PIWOSA’s stand at Cape Wine 2022 will be at the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC) between 5th and 7th October, where they will be showcasing the PIWOSA Collective and hosting experiential tastings presented by the South African Sommeliers Association (SASA)
  • The PIWOSA Dinner and After Party on 6th October at the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (Zeitz MOCAA), a masterpiece of architectural brilliance and a grand repository for thousands of African artworks: a grandiose backdrop for a celebration, enjoying the finest wines from the PIWOSA members and a sumptuous banquet

MORE ABOUT AVONDALE

In 1997, John and Ginny Grieve purchased Avondale, one of the oldest Paarl farms, as their family farm. Youngest son, Johnathan Grieve took up the challenge of transforming this long-used land into a robust, balanced, sustainable vineyard ecosystem that would ensure that Avondale will support the lives of future generations. He pioneered the organic-biodynamic-scientific approach he calls BioLOGIC® to continuously create conditions conducive to promoting life on the farm.

At Avondale, an internationally certified organic wine estate, sustainable and natural viticulture is carried out in accordance with Johnathan’s’ Terra Est Vita’ philosophy - 'Soil is Life', which encapsulates his view of the farm as a dynamic living system where soil, water and energy; plants, animals and people; even the buildings, are part of a complex web of relationships and networks. Avondale’s commitment to promoting life does not only lead to Mother Nature’s approval of their healthy, balanced vineyard ecosystem; it also ensures the premium quality of Avondale’s unique, naturally made, slow wines, so full of life and character and bursting with fresh flavours.

Every step of the way, a holistic, systems-based approach in harmony with nature and fine attention to detail has ensured that today, Avondale makes extraordinary wines approved by Mother Nature. For more info visit: www.avondalewine.co.za/
