DeVine Wine Club from Saldanah were crowned as the winner of the 39th annual Blaauwklippen Blending Competition at an awards lunch that was hosted at the Blaauwklippen Restaurant on the 29th of September.

More than 50 wine enthusiasts and clubs from across South Africa took part in the keenly contested competition, which is the longest running consumer blending competition in South Africa.

For this year’s competition, the challenge was to create a Bordeaux-style red blend from Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot varietals. This year’s judging panel consisted of: Narina Cloete (Blaauwklippen winemaker), Guy McDonald, Marius Lategan, Clive Torr and Jaco van der Westhuizen (Blaauwklippen viticulturist).

In mid-August the judges tasted the entries and nettled the contestants down to four semi-finalists:
  • Carignan My Wayward Son: Gauteng - Pretoria
  • DeVine Club: Western Cape - Saldanha
  • Kultivaria Wyngilde: Eastern Cape - Port Elizabeth
  • YinYang Wines: Limpopo - Polokwane

Of these four, DeVine Club came out tops and Frans and Marina Von Moltke of the club walked away with the coveted trophy yesterday. “Their winning blend is a sophisticated and classic wine with plum, cassis and dark chocolate nuances on the nose,” says Cloete.

In addition to the coveted trophy, DeVine Wine Club also earns recognition on the label of a limited-edition magnum release of the winning blend that is bottled and available at the Blaauwklippen Tasting Room.
