The winners of the annual Perold Absa Cape Blend awards were announced recently and included in the lineup was none other than Perdeberg’s Endura Winemakers Selection Cape Blend 2018.

Not only is prestige linked to this award, but it also shows that Perdeberg is making wines that enthusiasts want to buy and enjoy. In addition, they continue to make wines that trade customers want to include in their wine list.

“Being part of this selection of the best Cape blends is a great honour, and receiving this award confirms the quality wines that Perdeberg produces from our dry land vineyards,” says Cellar Master, Albertus Louw.

Entries were received from all wine regions in various styles and blend combinations, and a total of 33 entries were judged. The 2022 winners showcase the excellent vintages of 2018 and 2020.

The Endura Winemakers Selection Cape Blend 2018, a top-tier limited release that forms part of Perdeberg’s iconic range, is bottled only when there’s a vintage good enough to keep company with its exceptional forerunners. Made to reflect the true character of the varietals used in the blend, and showcase the diversity and uniqueness of the terroir, it truly is a wine of exceptional quality.

Only the finest wines from French Oak barrels were blended to create a harmony of flavours and balance. The Winemaker’s Selection Cape Blend is elegant with a fine tannin structure, intense colour and fruit-forward flavours, with promising ageing potential. The 2018 blend consists of 65% Pinotage, 19% Cabernet Sauvignon and 16% Malbec.

According to Louw, this Pinotage-driven blend displays aromas of dark berries, blackcurrant and red fruit, with nuances of cocoa and dried tobacco leaves. Blueberries, cherries and hints of vanilla are the prominent flavours on the palate, resulting in a well-structured palate with a long smooth finish.

Situated at the foothills of Paardeberg Mountain in Paarl, one of the finest wine-growing areas of the Cape, lies Perdeberg Cellar. The hallmark and most differentiating quality of Perdeberg wines is our predominant use of unirrigated vineyards, termed dry land vines. Overcoming difficult growing conditions, dry land vines yield small berries with concentrated flavour and colour, creating superior wines. The winery’s rich history dates back to 1941 when a visionary wine farmer named Jan Rossouw suggested the area’s farmers begin producing their wine. Perdeberg adopted its distinguishing name from the scores of Cape Mountain zebras that once roamed the Paardeberg area, mistaken for wild horses by local inhabitants.

With a vineyard span of over 3000 hectares, mainly in the Paarl and Swartland regions, Perdeberg benefits from different microclimates and various soil types. The natural variation of weather, soil, drainage and altitude from vineyard to vineyard enables us to produce a wide range of wines with distinct qualities and character. In the cellar, our wines are created through the synergy of art, intuition, and science to reveal the best of what has been brought in from the vineyards. We follow a wine estate-inspired process including intensive vineyard management, handpicking grapes in small crates, and small presses and maturing in barrels, to achieve exceptional quality.
