Nederburg has been identified as one of the World’s 50 Most Admired Wine Brands by leading specialist drinks journal Drinks International.

The winery’s inclusion on the best-of-best list is based on the newest survey of prominent wine buyers, sommeliers, Masters of Wine, wine writers and educators from every continent.

This year marks the sixth time that Nederburg has been featured. The famous Paarl winery is keeping company in 2023 with such iconic names in wine as Antinori (Italy), Concha y Toro (Chile) and Penfolds (Australia).
Members of the Drinks International voting academy make their selection according to three key criteria. These are quality and consistency, price to quality ratio and the strength of branding and marketing.

“To make it onto the list at any point is a great honour. But to do so at a time of fiercely accelerated global competition is a big achievement for us. We could not be prouder or more motivated,” said Kate Jackson, the winery’s GM.

We could not be prouder or more motivated,” said Kate Jackson, the Nederburg’s GM.
“We have kept our heads despite tougher markets, logistical setbacks brought on by geo-political conflicts and infrastructural issues such as port congestion. We just keep on doing what we do best, which is to offer consistent excellence across all price points, thanks to an ongoing investment in wine-growing and winemaking skills.”

She added that the winery’s continued emphasis on regenerative farming, its assiduous water stewardship recognised by WWF South Africa, and its protection of a close and long-standing network of supplier wine growers, had also helped to underpin the winery’s pursuit of quality.

“We make collectible, limited-edition, as well as higher-volume wines at the same time in the same cellars, led by the same team heads. That requires enormous focus, detailing and dedication. What makes it possible is a combination of terrific talent and cellar leadership, and that we accord the same level of respect to all our wines and our wine consumers.

“In our marketing, we try to remain interesting, relevant and accessible to the full range of wine lovers, from aficionados to those looking for the simple pleasure of good wine. We do this by enabling our consumers to taste, learn and discover our wide range of wines.”

Last month, cellar-master Samuel Viljoen was featured as a Master Winemaker 100 of 2023 in another global publication, The Drinks Business. Nederburg is also a regular recipient of awards at the Decanter World Wine Awards and the International Wine & Spirit Competition, as well as at competitions held in South Africa, including Veritas Awards and the Michelangelo International Wine & Spirits Awards.

Nederburg, a specialist in Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet-based red blends, also makes a range of other red and white wines, as well as rosé. The trusted brand sells in over 75 countries around the world. In South Africa, the purchase frequency of its popular red blend, Baronne, works out at the equivalent of one bottle being opened every 15 seconds.
