This Heritage Month, immerse yourself in the unique stories and experiences of Vergenoegd Löw, one of South Africa's oldest working farms, established in 1696.

Under the ownership of noted German historian and heritage specialist Prof. Dr. Dr. Peter Löw since 2015, this Stellenbosch estate cherishes its proud history and traditions while continuously innovating towards a prosperous future, and a world-class destination for visitors. Sustainability is a key principle in all their endeavours.

“We take a progressive and adaptive approach to conservation,” says Corius Visser, the estate’s managing director. “There are many traditions we respect and maintain because they help us to leave the lightest imprint on the land. But we also adopt new thinking and new technology to enhance our eco-sustainability.”

From its regenerative mixed-crop and animal farming to its 18th-century Cape Dutch architecture, tranquil indigenous gardens, walking trails, and wining and dining traditions, the estate offers a host of experiences for those who cherish preserving and celebrating history.

“At Vergenoegd Löw, we appreciate delving into and sharing the many fascinating chapters in the tale of this farm, spanning nearly 330 years,” Corius explains.

“In 1696, this farm was founded by Pieter de Vos, granted to him by the then-governing Dutch East India Company. It’s a very significant date, as it records officially when farming and viticulture began on our estate, less than 40 years after wine was made at the Cape for the first time in 1659.”

The estate offers a host of experiences for those who cherish preserving and celebrating history.

The DEIC established a refreshment station at the Cape for trading ships on the Spice Route between Europe and the Far East. By the end of the 17th century, they released some employees from service to establish their own farms to meet the growing need for provisions.

De Vos, enchanted by his new home, named the farm Vergenoegd, meaning "contented."

Vergenoegd became a significant wine producer by the mid-1700s when Ferdinand Appel succeeded Pieter de Vos and increased plantings to 25,000 vines. His daughter, Johanna Appel, married Johannes Colijn, who owned vineyards in Constantia.

“There’s a compelling theory presented by wine historian Joanne Gibson that Colijn, along with other Constantia wine producers, may have sourced grapes through family ties from non-Constantia farms like Vergenoegd and neighbours to create their internationally famous Constantia wines,” Corius states.

Joanne, author of Reds, Racehorse and Runner Ducks, a comprehensive book on Vergenoegd Löw’s rich history, writes of multiple documented opinions during the 18th century claiming that far more wine was being sold as Constantia wine than the Constantia vineyards could possibly have produced at the time.

In 1782, the farm was sold to Johan Georg Lochner. For almost a year, between 1786 and 1787, he hosted the artist Jan Brandes who documented life on the farm in his art.

“These pictorial records would later become a crucial source of information for the team tasked with restoring our historic buildings and indigenous gardens,” Visser says, referring to the recent upgrade of the farm.

Most of the Vergenoegd farm complex was declared a National Heritage site in 1974.

Among the works are three panoramas of Vergenoegd depicting the buildings and farming activities of the time. The one featuring the homestead has been an invaluable reference work for the architectural restorers. Other pictures of local birds and plant life are important references for the team rehabilitating parts of the farm to indigenous habitat.

Many of the works he created while on the farm are now housed in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, and some reproductions from his large collection can be seen on the estate.

After changing hands several times, the Faure family took over custodianship of the farm in 1820. They farmed here for almost two centuries over six generations, before selling to current owner Prof Dr Dr Löw, who is also the chief curator of the European Heritage Project (EHP).

“They were responsible for many advances over almost two centuries in charge, including establishing Vergenoegd's reputation as a pre-eminent producer of Cabernet Sauvignon. Moreover, previous owner John Faure laid a strong foundation for conservation work on the farm and continues to play an active role in this regard.”

It was fifth generation Jac Faure who established Vergenoegd’s status for outstanding Cabernet Sauvignon. He went on to win the General Smuts Trophy many times, beginning in 1972.

Jac’s son, John, became the sixth-generation owner. He brought many innovations of his own, including the introduction of the Indian Runner ducks as part of the farm’s integrated pest-management programme. John still breeds the ducks and manages them on the farm. He has and continues to play another key role by re-introducing indigenous bird species to the farm. Thanks to his active conservation work, the current team has had a strong basis from which to continue.

When Prof Dr Dr Peter Löw acquired the farm and initiated an extensive revitalisation programme, he successfully reclaimed the estate's reputation as a sought-after heritage destination. Under his leadership, Vergenoegd Löw now offers top-class wines, a variety of interactive wine tasting options, two highly-rated restaurants, expansive indigenous gardens, walking and cycling trails plus a luxury boutique hotel and spa.

The farm’s complimentary Heritage Tour allows visitors to dive deeper into the fascinating landmarks and stories of this important heritage site. Highlights on the tour include the finely restored homestead with its impressive 18th century Cape Dutch features. The famous Indian Runner ducks’ waddle across the werf is another major attraction. They and the Dexter cattle that eat the weeds, keep pests away and fertilise the soils naturally. It forms part of the farm’s integrated crop management.

The tour also features Vergenoegd Löw’s beautiful indigenous gardens where you’ll encounter the bronze sculptures of leading South African artist Dylan Lewis. Conceived as a bridge linking history, architecture and landscape, they show a melding of human with animal forms in the spirit of optimism as we seek to redefine humanity’s relationship with nature.

“For us, these sculptures signify renewal and hope. They are a constant reminder that we must find balance as we farm alongside nature, not against it,” Visser clarifies.

Then visit its rehabilitated wetlands area that shows their commitment to biodiversity and have earned them sought-after WWF Conservation Champion status.

Behold the magnificent vintage car in the Vintage Room and visit Clara's Barn restaurant – housed in possibly the oldest building on the estate (thought to predate the 1773 Homestead).

With celebrated chefs Bertus Basson and Drikus Brink at the helm of both establishments, the focus is on modern, exquisitely presented heritage cuisine which celebrates our diverse cultural influences.

Priced at R375 per person for seven small plates to share, the Geuwels menu features a variety of exciting heritage dishes inspired by Errieda’s cookbook, SAAM, such as Marmite & Huguenot cheese tart with chives, shaved pickled ox tongue with sweet mustard, venison bobotie jaffle with gestoofde vrugte, Vergenoegd uitpakslaai, ystervarkies (rice-and-meatballs) in tomato smoor, sweet potato cinnamon rolls with orange glaze and macadamia nuts, chutney chicken bake, and Frankie Fenner Meat Merchants dry-aged beef with chermoula. A total of 78 entries were received for this year’s annual Blaauwklippen Blending Competition.

Open to all aspiring winemakers this competition is there to encourage wine enthusiasts to create a winning blend.

For this year’s competition, the brief was to create a serious Bordeaux style blend with components from a very challenging 2023 vintage. Blenders received four wines (1 x Cabernet franc, 1 x Malbec, 1 x Merlot, 1 x Petit Verdot) and all four components had to be used in the final blend. A maximum 65 % of each Cultivar, with a minimum of 5% of each component had to be included in the blend.

The winning blend comprised 45% Cabernet Franc, 40% Merlot, 9% Malbec and 6% Petit Verdot. This blend was masterfully blended with floral cassis notes, supported by nuances of fruitcake, plum and dark chocolate. Fresh textured tannins give way to a juicy mid palate and a plush aromatic finish. Enjoy with friends now, or cellar for 15 to 20 years.

The other finalists to make it to the awards ceremony in order of rank were:

The name: “Sometimes we try too hard, we force things. Sometimes we need to stop trying and let life happen, sometimes we need to become one with the stream of consciousness,” says Bruce Jack.

The blend: This classic Rhône-style red wine is a blend of Cinsault and Shiraz with a touch of Grenache

Winemaking: In the cellar, the grapes are destemmed (with some whole berries and whole bunches) into a combination of closed and open top fermenters and the wine is allowed to ferment with a combination of cultivated and wild yeast. After fermentation the wine is gently pressed in a combination of press types, including basket presses, and aged in barrel for 12 months.

Tasting notes: A hedonistic nose of chocolate-smothered purple plums framed by vanilla and Indian spices introduces a palate of enveloping black and red forest fruit, with hints of brambles and a whisper of white pepper.

Cellaring: Enjoy this wine now or cellar at a cool temperature for 5 years.

Chef Bertus Basson and Errieda will be hosting a talk and traditional Sunday lunch, featuring a feast of heritage dishes from her celebrated cookbook, SAAM, on Sunday, 29 September, from 11:30.

Set to satisfy, expect favourites from skaapboud (leg of lamb) in pastry with gravy, pampoenpoffertjies (pumpkin puffs) and muscadel sauce, to milk tart and malva pudding, among a range of other delights.

Prof Harold Herman, activist and former Dean and Emeritus Professor of Education at the University of the Western Cape (UWC), who now serves on various boards, will share the history of the farms Vergenoegd Löw, Meerlust and Zandvliet, and their contributions to the local wine industry, against the backdrop of the Dutch and British colonial eras and related sociological developments.

The talk starts at 18:00, and sharing platters laden with mouth-watering Cape heritage food will be served at around 19:00.

The past two and a half years of Le Grand Domaine Enoteca have been marked by growth and shifts that have allowed it to explore multiple avenues of culinary and viticultural excellence. 

As this season progresses, it welcomes the changes brought forth and anticipates the success of the new management style, menu, and cocktail options.

Chef Jean-Theo Newman has been leading the Le Grand Domaine Enoteca kitchen for a year until he recently stepped up as the Chef Operator, instigating a shift into the hands-on management style that is gaining popularity. This format is beneficial for smaller restaurants as it provides a clear directive for the running of both front of house and back of house, working to clear the divide between the stations and ensure the efficient flow of service.

By minimising the divide between the sides of the wine bistro, the whole team is able to work seamlessly together and mutually bolster the honourable qualities achieved in all facets of Le Grand Domaine Enoteca. Chef Jean-Theo explains, “My wish for this move regarding the Enoteca is that we can incorporate the constant striving for perfection in the kitchen with the hospitability of the wine ambassadors to create a personalised and welcoming experience for the clients.”

Further changes include the introduction of the new menu design, which portrays the seasonal dishes in sections such as sea, bush, farm, and hive. As a format that is currently trending in Europe, it allows guests to view the expansive culinary range available whilst aiding in pinpointing potentially desired cuisines. The new menu acutely represents the duality of Le Grand Domaine Enoteca as a wine bistro, with its wine offered by cultivar and its food organised according to origin.

Beyond the new layout, there are intentions to develop the French inspirations of the cuisine served at the Enoteca with a Wine Spotlight menu. Taking matriarchal style food from various regions in France and tastefully elaborating upon them to intricately pair with select wines sold in house, this constantly evolving menu intends to highlight select red or white wines in rotation. Le Grand Domaine Enoteca is devoted to the creation of elegant food that complements its vast selection of wines by making use of the culinary to portray the wines’ prestige.

A much-anticipated addition to the variety hosted at Le Grand Domaine Enoteca is the Bubbly Hour, a period from 4PM to 6PM on Tuesdays to Saturdays and available the whole Sunday wherein exclusive MCC-based cocktails will be served. Either the Grand Vin de Stellenbosch MCC Brut 2021 or Kruger Family Reserve Marguerite MCC Brut 2019, will form the foundation for each beverage.

The menu includes classics like a Mimosa or French 75—for the citrus inclined— or the Poinsettia and Kir Royale are on offer if one is feeling more berry orientated. Chef Jean-Theo’s passion for mythology, sentiment, and creation stories inspired the unique selection of cocktails on offer. This includes options like the Moonwalk, which was coined after Apollo 11 astronauts, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin, prompted its creation as their first cocktail back on Earth, and the Hemingway MCC, an exotic combination of absinthe and MCC birthed from the glorious mind of Nobel Prize winner, Ernest Hemingway.

Chef Jean-Theo elaborates, “It is a way of drawing people in after work or class to unwind and enjoy something a little less serious with their favourite colleagues or classmates, while keeping it elegant, which is the style that the Enoteca is known for.”

Tokara invites the public to enjoy a day of botanical splendour at the Rare Plant Fair and Open Garden on Saturday, 26 October 2024. 

 This year it will be part of the Stellenbosch Garden Town festival, one of South Africa's most celebrated garden lifestyle events, which runs from Friday 25 October to Sunday 3 November 2024.

Experience Tokara in all its blooming glory as this renowned Stellenbosch family wine and olive estate opens its private farm garden to the public. The annual Rare Plant Fair features exhibitors from far and wide, presenting a unique opportunity for gardening enthusiasts to acquire rare and exotic plants. Cultivate your own spring retreat from a diverse selection of indigenous and exotic flora available for purchase on the day.

Stroll through tranquil garden paths adorned with magnificent sculptures by local artists. Highlights include terraces of the picking garden, serene wetlands, a textural cork oak forest, and a babbling mountain stream flowing into soothing lily ponds. Discover the dedicated oasis of indigenous flora and the extraordinary Adamastor Moss Garden, a continually evolving masterpiece.

The past two years have seen the remarkable integration of local sandstone, granite, indigenous mosses, and fynbos in the Moss Garden. This year, the garden's beauty is further enhanced by hand-chiselled Paarl granite pieces, creating a kaleidoscope of muted hues and textures. The newly completed hewn stone lintels framing the garden invite visitors to experience the tranquil beauty reminiscent of a Japanese-inspired, South African landscape. Collect your picnic at the Boathouse next to the unique Dionysus sculpture and enjoy a leisurely meal on the rolling lawns below the main house.

Judges impressed by strong showings across vintages

No less than 160 wines from 91 producers are competing for a coveted place in the 2024 FNB Sauvignon Blanc's SA Top 10.

This year’s competition drew strong entries across several vintages. Over three days, from 27 to 29 August, a panel of esteemed judges evaluated the entries at Uitkyk Estate in Stellenbosch, led by Cape Wine Master Dr. Winifred Bowman.

Joining Dr. Bowman on the panel were prominent wine experts Johann Fourie, head winemaker at Benguela Cove Lagoon Wine Estate; Dr. Carien Coetzee, oenologist at Basic Wine; Morgan Steyn, winemaker at De Grendel Wines; and Mahalia Kotjane, owner-winemaker of Three Quarter Wines. Two protégé judges, Kelsey Nel, assistant winemaker at Hartenberg Wine Estate, and Anke van Zyl, an intern at Neil Ellis Wines, also joined.

Both wooded and unwooded styles show class, balance, and texture

The panel particularly praised the 2023 vintage for its pure varietal expression.

Bowman noted the effective use of lees aging in unwooded entries, enhancing complexity and texture, while in wooded examples, oak added depth without overpowering the fruit flavours. The panel also highlighted the balance and vibrancy across the entire style spectrum of the 2024 vintage.

"The best wines exhibited class, balance, and texture," Bowman said, adding that many excellent wines missed the final cut only by small margins.

Bowman praised Sauvignon Blanc SA for their continued efforts in keeping the variety in the spotlight, acknowledging its status as the country’s best-selling cultivar.

Acknowledging industry support

Coetzee, a member of the Sauvignon Blanc SA managing committee, expressed gratitude for the support of the long-term partners of the competition, which has been hosted since 2007. "The collaboration with FNB as Top 10 title partner and EVER Solutions as platinum partner is crucial to our ongoing pursuit of excellence in Sauvignon Blanc," she said.

Important dates

The twenty finalists will be announced later this month, with the FNB Sauvignon Blanc SA Top 10 revealed at the awards event on Wednesday 16 October. A technical seminar and the Sauvignon Blanc SA Annual General Meeting are scheduled for Thursday 21 November at Hazendal Wine Estate.

It’s back! South Africa’s favourite food competition  

The Porcupine Ridge Pizzeria Challenge - returns for a fourth outing to find out who is South Africa's favourite pizzamaker as voted for by consumers.

In last year’s hotly contested competition, the top spot was reclaimed by the 2021 winner, Gino’s of Robertsham, having lost out in 2022 to Ferdinando’s, one of Cape Town’s most popular pizzerias.

A Johannesburg institution, Gino’s also celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2023, a fact which made their victory all the sweeter! “It was a tremendous validation of what we do, which is to provide delicious Italian food made with passion and which is good value-for-money. What makes the win even sweeter is that the competition is voted for by the public, so it proves that we are doing the right thing for our customers,” said owner Gino Mazza.

The other restaurants who made it into the top 10 included Osteria Rossa (Bedfordview), Gino’s (Stellenbosch), Ferdinando's (Observatory, Cape Town), Mooiuitsig Kombuis (Groot Brakrivier), Piccola Rossa (Edenvale), Corlie’s Italian (Somerset West), Julia’s Eatalian (Potchefstroom), Lucio’s Pizzeria (Northcliff) and Enzo Pizzeria Trattoria (Scottburgh).

Says Porcupine Ridge spokesman Lynton Kaiser: “Last year’s competition was a real ding- dong battle and the rivalry, while fierce, was also very friendly. We had close to 100 eateries challenging each other for the top prize, including competing sisters, competing brothers, brand new establishments and 40-year old restaurants, all of whom made it into the top 10.

“What was also wonderful about last year’s challenge was the provincial representation of restaurants taking part. We had establishments in almost every province in the country participating which made it a truly national competition. It was also great to see restaurants in places like Groot Brakrivier, Potch and Somerset West doing so well.”

The good news is that while most of last year’s challengers have entered the challenge again this year, there is also a raft of newcomers eager to elbow the favourites out of the way.

“We are confident there’ll be more entrants this year and the competition will be even more intense while still remaining loads of fun,” adds Kaiser.

The rules stay the same, with the public voting for their favourite local pizzeria via a dedicated website. The restaurant with the most votes will be crowned South Africa's favourite pizzeria, picking up the ultimate bragging rights as well as wine and marketing collateral to the value of R40 000. A new introduction this year, sees additional prizes for all of the top 10 restaurants, each of which receive R1,800 in vouchers plus three cases of wine to award to their top, Porcupine Ridge-selling servers.

In addition, consumers, voting for their favourite venue, can win a weekly prize of six bottles of Porcupine Ridge wines and an EarthFire pizza accessories, with one lucky voter selected Grand Prize Winner at the end of the competition and receiving an EarthFire Tabletop Pizza Oven, pizza for a year from their favourite pizzeria (to the value of R2 000) and five cases of Porcupine Ridge Wines, for a combined value of R10 000.

The competition kicks off on September 1 with the last day of voting being October 31 and the top 10 announced in mid-November.
