Winter is pancakes, hearty stews and hot chocolate toddies ... but with the hunting season straddling the June holidays, venison is also on everyone’s lips.

And what better partner for venison than Shiraz? In celebration of this distinct cultivar, Shiraz SA initiated 7 Days of Shiraz and Venison and foodies can look forward to a myriad of initiatives offered by more than 30 wine farms from 11 to 17 June.

“We invited the members of SA Shiraz to participate with a unique eating experience and they’ve overwhelmed us with creative ideas that truly fly the banner for Shiraz,” says Edmund Terblanche, Shiraz SA chairperson.

Wine lovers can expect anything from game biltong and Shiraz tastings, 5 and 6 course dinners and sumptuous platters paring venison and Shiraz, dishes especially developed for just this occasion, and bespoke menus and events dreamed up for Father’s Day.

Visitors to this year’s US Woordfees in Stellenbosch had a glimpse of such a horizon-broadening tasting experience when game such as zebra, blesbok, eland and wild boar wild was presented with Shiraz from the different wine regions. Gourmand Bertus Basson prepared the venison, while Terblanche guided guests on the wine journey.
