Still basking in the warmth of the win as the world’s number one food destination (when readers of the influential Condé Nast Traveler voted Cape Town the best city for dining in 2024), the Cape has just been lavished with more love.

This time, Vergenoegd Löw The Wine Estate Hotel & Spa near Stellenbosch has been judged the world’s best luxury honeymoon hotel of the year by the prestigious Boutique Hotel Club Awards.

Considered by some within the hospitality fraternity as the equivalent of the Michelin stars rating system but for the luxury accommodation sector, the Boutique Hotel Club Awards celebrate exclusive stays that offer uniqueness of experience and location, luxury and sustainability. Over 500 establishments from 80 countries were evaluated for the awards, made across several categories.

Vergenoegd Löw’s 160 ha mixed farming estate that boasts an award-winning winery and two top restaurants conceived by Stellenbosch supremo Bertus Basson and his colleague Drikus Brink, offers a premier collection of individually appointed, ultra-luxury suites, all with their own jacuzzis or swimming pools.

Guests are treated to floor-to-ceiling views of the vineyards or the mountains, complimentary wine tastings, the chance to view commissioned artworks by renowned local artists, including Dylan Lewis and Manuela Holzer. They can luxuriate in the health and treatment spa, stroll through the indigenous gardens, watch the local aquatic bird life catch the wind, and explore the labyrinth or puzzle maze.

The heritage establishment, a member of the exclusive European Heritage Project portfolio of hotels, features several prime examples of finely restored 18th century classical Cape Dutch architectural buildings that have collectively been declared a national monument.

Vergenoegd Löw is also a WWF Conservation Champion, recognised for its regenerative agricultural endeavours and the restoration of land corridors to indigenous habitat. Efforts that have been underway since 2015, have already seen the return of much local bird life to the farm’s vlei.

The judges were charmed by the estate’s award-winning wines, the two restaurants - Geuwels (for casual fare) and the fine-dining Clara’s Barn - the luxury suites, as well as by the iconic Indian Runner ducks that keep the vineyards largely free of pests.

An increasingly popular choice for exclusive, intimate weddings, Vergenoegd Löw has its own private chapel and a vintage Rolls Royce for transporting bridal couples.

Two other South African hotels were also rewarded in the 2024 Boutique Club Hotel Awards. The title of World’s Best Boutique Hotel went to Akademie Street Boutique Hotel in Franschhoek, while the World’s Best Beach Hotel award went to Lekkerwater Beach Lodge in the De Hoop Nature Reserve.
